Psychological Evaluations for Bariatric Surgery

Surgeons often require a psychological evaluation prior to bariatric surgery. While this can sound alarming or frightening to some, it is for good reason: bariatric surgery is a major undertaking and can be transformative not only in exciting and health-affirming ways but in unexpectedly challenging ways as well. The demands of the lifestyle adjustments are considerable, and the emotional effects of sudden, significant weight change can be more difficult than expected. Psychological evaluations not only support you to navigate surgery more safely, but also to access support at all stages, and feel more at ease and in command of your journey. Many bariatric surgery candidates are surprised at how enlightening and integral this piece of their journey becomes. Evaluations last between 30-90 minutes. They are private one-on-one meetings and confidential within the parameters of mental health and bariatric surgery teams.
